HUMAN FIGURES

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

Human figures are an essential tool for any sketcher, especially in architecture, to create spaces that are relatable and understandable. Here I will try to demystify the process of human figures drawing.

Why do I need to include human figures in my sketches?

  1. Most importantly, human figures provide an indication of scale, context, and a sense of depth to the sketches buildings and objects.

  2. Human figures represent how the sketched spaces are perceived and inhabited. By populating a sketch, we make the spaces more relatable to the accommodation of human experience.

  3. Architecture is all about creating spaces for humans; and so they become key elements in any sketched space.

Sketching human figures:

Human figures sketches do not have to be detailed. They are loose line sketches with simple lines suggesting the human anatomy. A simple approach to sketching human figures is dividing the human body into 3 parts: head, upper body, and lower body.

Steps of sketching a human figure.

Generally, start with an oval suggesting the head of the person. Place a line under the head to indicate the shoulder width. Draw two lines on the right and left side and connect them to suggest the upper body. The lower body is simply represented with two lines meeting on the ground with a line (or triangle in this case) suggesting the gap between the legs.

There are no right or wrong styles for sketching human figures.

Follow these simple guidelines for the silhouette and sketch a human figure that is unique to your style.

Placing human figures:

Knowing where and how to place your human figure in a sketch is as important as having any. When populating a sketch, there are some things to keep into consideration:

  • All human figures lie on the same horizon line.

This is especially true when you are sketching an elevation. Even if they are at different depth, all human figure heads must lie on the same horizon line

  • The distribution of human figures should be realistic and uneven.

People generally occupy a space in uneven groups. Having an even distribution of people will create an unrealistic representation of the sketched space.

Hope that was helpful.

Don't forget to name, sign, and date your work.
